Massage is thought to be the oldest form of medical therapy and has its roots amongst many of the ancient civilizations. Images of people being massaged have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs, and for just as long the Indians have long practiced known the healing properties of massage using aromatherapy oils and spices. Even Greek and Roman heroes like Julius Caesar underwent daily massages to treat nerve pain and stress.

The most widely-practised form of touching therapy today is Swedish massage. First introduced in the 19th century, Swedish masseurs were thought to have borrowed many of their techniques from China, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Stephen Jones combines this therapeutic treatment with other complementary techniques including aromatherapy and sound.
